Calabar
has fast assume a world cultural carnival and festivals centre. The traffic of
tourists to other parts of the world for business and leisure has since 2007
considered Cross River State, Nigeria the preferred destination.
For
several years now, the land and people of Cross River State has enjoyed mention
as one of the world’s commercially viable destinations which has invariably
impacted on the state’s status as a former heavily dependent state on Federal
allocation to a revenue generating state in the country. This is not
unconnected with the creation of The Calabar Carnival, a full month celebration
of culture, color, beauty and abundance of variety.
Since
the opening up of our cultural festivals and carnivals and as more of the world
gets to hear and come to see, it will be pertinent to transform the state into
a world-must-visit place by harnessing the more than 50 cultural groups and
dialect into one big commodity ready for the global market.
Yala,
a local government in the state celebrates
“Ihi – Onipipe”, an age long cultural festival that brings all indigenes
and friends of the community together every 30th August, the Ugep,
Obudu, Bekwara, Ishibori, Ikom and so many others can be part of a bigger
celebration all year round.
Calabar
can do well to spread the tourism message to its immediate communities and
prepare them for the change that will boost cultural affinity, entrepreneurship
and expansion of the business of growing the state through tourism and hospitality.
